Adele wanted to record a cover version of the Judy Garland version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" from the 1944 film Meet Me in St. Louis, but sung in the style of the character of Aurora from Disney's Sleeping Beauty (1959). A strange request, but she's a strange girl. I started by hunting for an instrumental, and having not found one, I created one in Pro Tools using Native Instruments libraries. We recorded her vocals in my home studio using a Neumann TLM 102 microphone, and I mixed/mastered using Ozone and Waves plugins.
For the video, I used my Canon 5D mkII, with a 50mm lens. I looped some fairy lights across my balcony, and used that in combination with London's city lights as a background. We shot a few stationary takes of Adele singing, and then I took the camera off the tripod and shot some cutaways and closeups.
I cut the video together using Premiere Pro, using Magic Bullet Looks to get the feel I wanted. We thought about using black and white, but in the end we thought it would spoil the effect we'd created for the background, so in the end I created a vintage film look which I really like. You can see the video below, and I'm very proud about what I created with Adele.
